The Western World was first introduced to kratom by the Dutch Botanist Pieter Willem Korthals. He named the kratom tree after a bishop’s miter because it resembled it. After his discovery, prominent British surgeon Geroge Darb Haviland agreed with Korthals original description. Edward Morrel Holmes, a British botanist and curator of the Materia Medica Museum of the Pharmaceutical Society from 1872-1922, began the first of many to discover the unique character traits of kratom.
